The Gates of the Fort
Welcome to Aquis Querquennis, colloquially known as A Cidá (“the city”). A Roman camp was established here, to be replaced by a permanent fort soon after. A mansio viaria (road inn) was also placed nearby.
Aquis Querquennis is located on the banks of the Limia River (parish of Baños de Bande), partially flooded by the waters of As Conchas dam.
The doors were not only used to control whoever tried to enter the fort from the outside but also maintain the discipline of the soldiers who lived inside.
